Dick van Engelen

He has been admitted as an attorney-at-law in the Netherlands since 1984, specialising in intellectual property, competition, and commercial law. He has extensive experience in patent litigation before the Dutch courts, including cases leading to significant decisions of the Court of Appeal of The Hague and the Dutch Supreme Court, as well as proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union concerning trademark exhaustion and copyright law. He is currently acting as counsel in proceedings before the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and has provided expert opinion in UPC litigation. Since 2007, he has served as professor of law at Utrecht University (2007–2016) and Maastricht University (since 2016). He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Dutch IP law platforms Boek9.nl and IP-PorTal (ippt.eu), covering Dutch, CJEU, and UPC case law. Since 2022, he has also served as Senior Lecturer in the European Patent Litigation Certificate programme organised by Maastricht University and the Academy of European Law (ERA), accredited by the UPC.
