Professional biography
Professor Jianli Song is a professor of intellectual property law and International Economic Law, an experienced neutral with nearly three decades of professional experience in adjudication, intellectual property, international commercial dispute resolution, arbitration-related judicial review, and alternative dispute resolution. His current work focuses on cross-border intellectual property and commercial disputes, international arbitration and mediation, standard-essential patents (SEPs) and FRAND licensing, technology disputes, private international law, and the coordination of litigation, arbitration, and mediation in multi-jurisdictional proceedings. From 1997 to 2019, Professor Song served as a Senior Judge of the Supreme People’s Court of China, including as a Judge of the China International Commercial Court. During his judicial career, he handled more than 800 cases involving complex international commercial and maritime disputes, arbitration agreements and arbitral awards, recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards, jurisdiction, applicable law, and other cross-border legal issues. His judicial experience has given him substantial expertise in arbitral procedure, due process, evidence, judicial supervision of arbitration, and the interaction between arbitral tribunals and national courts. From 2019 to 2025, he served as the Founding Director of the Intellectual Property Office of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of China. In that capacity, he handled or supervised more than 400 intellectual property cases involving patents, standard-essential patents, FRAND licensing, trade secrets, copyright, trademarks, and technology-related disputes. He also participated in the mediation and negotiated settlement of more than 80 intellectual property disputes, including complex and high-value cases. Professor Song has particular professional and academic expertise in cross-border patent and technology disputes, SEPs/FRAND, parallel proceedings, jurisdictional conflicts, anti-suit measures, and international patent enforcement. He serves as an expert adviser on standard-essential patents and overseas intellectual property dispute resolution and has participated extensively in international exchanges concerning intellectual property and dispute resolution involving China, Europe, Japan, and other jurisdictions. He is also a neutral of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and has substantial experience in judicial and institutional mediation. His approach to dispute resolution combines rigorous legal analysis with commercial problem-solving, particularly in cases involving continuing licensing, technology, investment, or business relationships. Professor Song holds a Ph.D. in International Economic Law from Wuhan University and an LL.M. in International Trade Law from the Southampton Institute. He has published extensively on international commercial dispute resolution, intellectual property, arbitration, and private international law. His books include Foreign-Related Commercial Disputes Resolution in China: Principles and Practices (Springer, 2024) and International Commercial Disputes: Principles and Practice (2019). His professional profile combines senior judicial experience, intellectual property expertise, international dispute resolution experience, and mediation practice, making him particularly well suited to serve as a neutral in complex cross-border patent, technology, SEP/FRAND, and international commercial disputes involving Chinese, Asian, and multinational parties.

Brief description

I adopt a flexible, primarily evaluative and facilitative mediation style, drawing on nearly three decades of experience in adjudication, intellectual property, international commercial disputes and ADR. I focus on identifying the key legal and commercial issues, realistically assessing litigation and arbitration risks, and helping parties narrow differences and explore practical settlement options. In complex IP and technology disputes, I also pay particular attention to preserving business relationships, confidentiality and commercially workable outcomes.
