Professional biography
Dr Julian Potter is a private practice European and UK Patent Attorney with over three decades practice in patents and combines deep technical expertise with commercial acuity to deliver patent solutions that work in the technology business world. His practice is built around physics, electronics, and software-based technologies, with particular strength in telecommunications, semiconductors, medical devices, software (most recently machine learning and artificial intelligence), security and cryptography. His approach is further informed by both in-house commercial experience with a major international mobile telephone company and extensive litigation practice in the UK courts, including the Court of Appeal and Patents Court, as well as contentious proceedings and taking matters to Appeal at the EPO. Julian has a dual perspective being both a patent draftsperson and prosecution expert, as well as a patent litigator/advocate, holding both a Higher Courts Advocacy Certificate and a Higher Courts Litigator Certificate. He is also a Unified Patent Court (UPC) representative entitling him to appear before the EU Unified Patent Court. He has represented clients in over five High Court cases, including landmark case Halliburton v Smith, the first English High Court case addressing infringement of a claim to a Computer Implemented Invention. Additionally, Julian has been involved in many contentious matters that settled before court proceedings were issued, often managing to achieve settlement by advising or arguing for a likely outcome should any proceedings be initiated. This contentious experience directly informs how Julian formulates solutions to patent issues and has given him significant insight into the practice and methods of arbitrating contentious proceedings and the making of appropriate awards. Julian has consistently achieved Band One recognition from Chambers & Partners from 2014 through to 2026, reflecting peer recognition of his deep knowledge and experience of patent matters, and the commercial value and insights he delivers to clients. His work spans early-stage portfolio development through to complex multi-jurisdictional enforcement, always with an eye on the commercial objectives. Notable positions held: Board Member | International Technology Law Association Inc. | May 2019 – May 2025; Chairman | Parliamentary Committee, Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys | May 2010 – July 2013 .
