Professional biography
Taraneh Maghamé is an internationally recognized intellectual property and licensing attorney, business leader, and legal and policy advisor with extensive experience in complex intellectual property disputes, licensing negotiations, dispute resolution, and cross-border transactions. Her combination of senior in-house leadership, global licensing and litigation experience, as well as international IP policy work, provides a strong foundation for serving as a neutral in intellectual property, technology, licensing, and FRAND disputes. She currently has her own firm advising a diverse set of clients on IP and standards issues.
Ms. Maghamé's career includes senior in-house legal and licensing roles at Apple, HP, Via Licensing and Tessera Technologies, where she advised on patent licensing and litigation, strategic corporate IP matters, M&A, standards, and complex transactions across the United States, China, Japan, Korea, and Europe. This experience gives her a practical understanding of the legal, technical, and commercial considerations underlying intellectual property disputes, as well as the perspectives of both licensors and implementers in licensing negotiations.
Ms. Maghamé has substantial experience resolving complex licensing disputes through negotiated and collaborative solutions. She has developed and implemented global licensing strategies, created wireless technology licensing programs with major industry partners, and negotiated and closed high-value bilateral and multiparty licensing agreements. Her experience evaluating patent portfolios, licensing terms, comparable agreements, valuation methodologies, and FRAND considerations is particularly relevant to the resolution of disputes involving standard-essential patents, patent licensing, royalty rates, and other technology-related commercial matters. She also has significant litigation and dispute-resolution experience, including managing teams of attorneys in multimillion-dollar patent, IP, and commercial disputes before U.S. federal courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and courts and tribunals in foreign jurisdictions.
Ms. Maghamé is a recognized thought leader on intellectual property policy, SEP licensing, and FRAND issues. She has served as an expert and advisor for international regulatory bodies and industry organizations and was selected to serve on the European Commission’s Expert Group on Licensing and Valuation of Standard Essential Patents and the PMAC Working Group on FRAND Guidelines. She has participated in numerous global standards organizations, including ETSI and ITU-T, on behalf of clients and as a member of the U.S. government delegation, and has held leadership roles in various IP-related organizations and committees.
Drawing on this combination of legal, commercial, licensing, litigation, standards, and international experience, Ms. Maghame is well positioned to serve as a neutral in complex disputes involving intellectual property and technology. Her areas of particular relevance for arbitral and mediated proceedings include patent and SEP licensing, FRAND disputes, royalty and valuation issues, technology transactions, standards-related matters, and cross-border commercial disputes involving intellectual property.
