Professional legal or litigation experience related to the scope of competence of the PMAC

Qualified UK and European patent attorney since 1995 and started working in patent law in 1990. Involved in contentious matters, usually in a settlement context.
His first patent infringement court case was in the English courts in 1998 (Visx v Nidek) which was part of a multinational dispute with parallel cases in US, Canada and France.
Holder of an Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate, which confers rights to conduct appeals in the UK High Court from decisions of the UK IPO or the Appointed Person, to seek judicial review of such decisions in the High Court, and to conduct litigation and be heard in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court or the County Court in defined cases.
Authorised representative at the UPC.
Involved in litigation before the UK Courts and also the Eastern District Texas, USA for several decades. Most of his experience in IP contentious matters is of settlement, pre-trial as a legal representative of one party. More recently, he has been conducting mediations explicitly as a neutral, also usually, pre-trial. Given the UK landscape of potential costs penalties for not making serious attempts to settle or carry out ADR (and compulsory mediation for claims below £10,000), many disputes are mediating before proceedings are issued.

In January 2024- completed an accredited 40 hour training course and qualification in Civil and Commercial Mediation with Align Mediation, UK. The training is accredited by the Civil Mediation Council and the International Mediation Institute. He completed mediation observations in December 2024 to become a Registered Mediator with the Civil Mediation Council (facilitative mediation).

Trained conflict coach and community mediator and volunteer in Warwickshire UK for Mediation and Community Support (MACS). This is typically transformative mediation used in neighbour or workplace disputes.

2025 - Mediation of domain name dispute and dissolution of LLP. Proceedings issued in London and moved to defendant's location - Bristol County Court. 3 parties.
2024 - Mediation of patent infringement dispute of 2 European patents. Between Dutch and UK manufacturers of roller blinds. Settled. No proceedings issued.
2019 - Patent infringement of RF, electronic remote control system. Two UK parties. No proceedings issued. Represented one of the UK parties. Settled.
2018 - Patent infringement of micro-power generation technology. Several European jurisdictions (from European Patent) and US. Revealed during due diligence exercise. US and UK parties. Acted for UK party. Settled.
2012 - Patent Infringement of a portfolio of Oil and Gas Industry patents in UK and US. Dispute between UK and US parties. Proceedings issued in Eastern District Texas. Out of court settlement in UK and then US. Represented UK party.
2005 - Patent infringement of US and European Patents - video conferencing hardware. Proceedings issued in UK and US. Acted for UK party. Settled.
1998 - Design and copyright infringement dispute between designer and UK retailer. Represented designer. Proceedings issued in IPEC. Out of court settlement.
