Professional biography
Oliver Knura is a commercial mediator based in Frankfurt, Germany, specialising in complex B2B disputes, particularly those involving contractual, technical and financial issues. Since establishing his dispute resolution practice in 2018, he has handled numerous commercial mediations and other dispute resolution proceedings across a range of industries. His mediation experience includes disputes in engineering and construction, manufacturing, sale of goods and services, finance, franchising and agency relationships, online platforms, IT, real estate, and shareholder and partnership matters. Typical disputes involve contractual performance, payment claims, delays, defects, warranties, and the termination or restructuring of business relationships. He conducts mediations in German and English, both in person and online. Before becoming a mediator, Oliver spent more than 20 years in international industry, primarily in the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) sector. He held senior management positions in commercial project management, procurement and supply chain management, with responsibility for contract and claim management and the commercial management of large-scale international projects. His work included projects and business relationships across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. Throughout his corporate career, Oliver gained extensive experience in complex commercial negotiations and dispute resolution with customers, suppliers and subcontractors. He negotiated contracts, claims, change orders and project close-out agreements and participated in international arbitration and mediation proceedings as a party representative. This experience provides him with a practical understanding of the commercial, technical and organisational dimensions of complex disputes as well as the perspective of parties involved in dispute resolution proceedings. Oliver is a CEDR Accredited Mediator and a member of the CEDR International Mediator Panel. He is also a Certified Mediator under German law and is recognised by the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt as a state-approved conciliation office (“Gütestelle”). His mediation approach is structured, interest-based and solution-oriented. He focuses on helping parties assess their commercial interests and risks, explore viable options and negotiate practical, future-oriented solutions. Oliver holds a degree in Industrial Engineering (Diplom-Wirtschaftsingenieur) and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

Brief description

Oliver Knura follows a structured, interest-based and solution-oriented mediation approach, viewing mediation as a facilitated negotiation. He helps parties move beyond positions, identify their underlying commercial interests and develop practical, future-oriented solutions. Depending on the case, he combines joint sessions with confidential separate meetings (shuttle mediation). Reality testing, including consideration of risks and alternatives to settlement, is an important part of his approach. Particularly in complex B2B disputes, he focuses on commercial logic, constructive negotiation and solutions that are viable for all parties, while leaving decisions on settlement entirely with the parties.
