Professional biography
Dr. Jonas Heitto has over 25 years of experience in technology and patent licensing, IP valuation, R&D collaborations and intellectual property related policy work. His educational background includes a law degree from the University of Helsinki, Dr. iur. from the University of Freiburg (dissertation on accumulation and delimitation of IP rights) and an LL.M. from the University of Tübingen (thesis on civil procedure). Dr. Heitto has trained with the European Patent Office and the European Commission and worked as a trademark examiner with the Finnish Patent and Trademark Office. He is currently employed with Nokia Technologies, where he licenses telecommunications related standard essential patents (SEPs) across diverse industries since 10 years. Prior to his global licensing function, he supported Alcatel and Alcatel-Lucent R&D, sales, purchasing and licensing departments in a legal role for more than 15 years. His in-house legal work, with a strong IP specialisation, included drafting and negotiating contracts with suppliers, customers, licensees and collaboration partners based in Europe and in the United States. His work further included training of junior in-house lawyers. Dr. Heitto has participated in IP related policy discussions at the national and European level and chaired the DigitalEurope IPR working group. He has represented European ICT industry interests in legislative proceedings relating to the Technology Transfer Group Exemption, the R&D Group Exemption, the Horizontal Guidelines, the State Aid Framework for R&D&I, and the Unified Patent Court. He has published numerous articles and spoken publicly, in Europe and in China, about trade secret and patent licensing. The European Commission has heard him as an invited expert on several occasions. Dr. Heitto has taught contract drafting, risk management, dispute resolution and patent valuation in German and in English, and served as expert in high-profile licensing disputes.
