Professional biography
Anders Hansson is a European Patent Attorney, Partner at EIP, and a Technically Qualified Judge of the Unified Patent Court. He combines nearly two decades of experience in patent law with a strong technical background in applied physics and mathematics, making him particularly well suited to the resolution of complex international technology disputes.
Anders serves as a Technically Qualified Judge of the Unified Patent Court and has also sat on numerous occasions as a technical judge in the Swedish Patent and Market Court and Patent and Market Court of Appeal. He has participated in the adjudication of patent infringement, validity, and entitlement cases before mixed panels of legally and technically qualified judges. Through this judicial experience, he has developed substantial expertise in evaluating technical evidence, assessing competing expert opinions, and analysing complex questions at the intersection of technology and patent law.
Prior to his judicial appointments, Anders worked both in private practice and in industry. Early in his career, he led a patent team responsible for inventions originating from a major developer of audio coding technologies. He was entrusted with the drafting and prosecution of patent applications relating to technologies incorporated into internationally adopted standards and acquired first-hand experience of the relationship between patent claims and technical specifications, including claim interpretation, standards analysis, and essentiality assessment. Patents originating from this portfolio have subsequently been asserted successfully before the Unified Patent Court.
Anders later served as an IPR Commercialization Manager within Ericsson’s patent assertion function, where he was involved in licensing activities relating to one of the world's largest telecommunications patent portfolios and supported international litigation projects. His work included extensive engagement with standard-essential patents (SEPs), FRAND licensing, and the technical and legal issues arising in global patent licensing and enforcement disputes.
His technical expertise covers telecommunications, audio and video coding, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, and related signal-processing technologies. Owing to his combined experience in standards-related patent drafting, SEP licensing, and judicial decision-making, Anders has particular expertise in the analysis of patent essentiality. He regularly works with questions requiring detailed comparison of patent claims against technical specifications and has extensive experience evaluating competing technical arguments concerning standard implementation, infringement, and essentiality. His experience spans both telecommunications standards and media-coding standards, making him particularly well suited to act as an arbitrator or independent expert in disputes involving standard-essential patents and FRAND-related issues.
Anders holds an M.Sc. in Applied Physics from Lund University and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2011, obtained the Patent Litigation Certificate from CEIPI, University of Strasbourg, in 2013, and passed the Swedish patent attorney qualification examination in 2014. He has authored and co-authored works in mathematics and legal commentary in the field of patent law. Anders works professionally in English and has strong working proficiency in German (certified level C2) and French.
