Professional biography
Dr. Matthias Grob studied physics at the University of Göttingen and at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen with a focus on biophysics and physics of complex systems. He dedicated his thesis to the rheology of granular matter, which he investigated using theoretical and computational methods with a particular focus on numerical simulations, which he developed and implemented specifically for high-performance graphics cards (GPUs). He completed his PhD with distinction. Dr. Grob has practised in the field of intellectual property since 2017. He was admitted as a German patent attorney in 2020 and has been enrolled in the list of professional representatives before the European Patent Office in 2021. Since 2021, he has practised as a self-employed patent attorney and, in 2023, co-founded the IP firm Pavant, where he continues to practise. In 2023, he completed the University Diploma in Patent Litigation in Europe at the Centre d’études internationales de la propriété intellectuelle (CEIPI) in Strasbourg. In June 2026, he was admitted as an Expert to the list of neutrals of the Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC) of the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Dr. Grob's practice encompasses patent prosecution, opposition proceedings, and the preparation of expert opinions. His current technical areas of focus comprise in particular computer-implemented inventions — particularly in the field of autonomous driving — as well as battery cell technology and mechanical engineering. He is the author of numerous articles on intellectual property law, in particular relating to procedural and substantive patent law.
