Professional biography
Dr. Avv. Magali Contardi is an Italian-qualified attorney specialised in intellectual property and innovation law, a member of the Milan and Munich Bars, and a UPC representative. She has more than ten years of experience in IP practice and research, with a particular focus on complex, cross-border and technology-related disputes, IP commercialisation and technology transfer. She often assists clients in multi-party and cross-border matters involving sectors including medical devices and healthcare, renewable energy, semiconductors, robotics, IoT and AI, packaging, food, fashion and creative industries. Her practice includes proceedings and negotiations before the EPO, EUIPO, UIBM and national courts, often coordinating foreign counsel and technical experts. Her core expertise is technology transfer, particularly structuring and negotiating IP licensing programmes and complex technology transactions. She regularly negotiates and drafts licensing, ownership, R&D, and consortium agreements in complex and dispute-sensitive contexts. She often works in interdisciplinary environments, where legal, technical, commercial and contractual issues intersect. She helps to translate complex legal, technical, and factual issues into structured solutions that support negotiation and dispute settlement. Her previous professional background includes experience in the Legal and International Affairs Department of the European Patent Office, the Board of Appeal of EUIPO, as well as at a law firm in Germany. Alongside her practice, Dr Contardi has held academic roles in IP, including as a postdoctoral researcher at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, focusing on copyright and data, and as a Senior IPR researcher at the 4iP Council. She is an adjunct professor in the LL.M. in Digital Law and Technology at the University of Lyon, and a tutor/lecturer for the WIPO-Harvard PatentX Course. She holds a PhD in AI, patents, and medical devices, summa cum laude with international doctorate distinction, from the University of Alicante, with a research period at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich. She has also completed specialised training in mediation, with a focus on cross-border and IP disputes, at the University of Alicante. She is a member of AIPPI and contributes to the Pharma Committee. She is an Of Counsel lawyer at BMlex.
