Georg Baumann

Georg Baumann is a judge at the Munich Higher Regional Court (court of appeal). He is a member of the 6th Civil Senate, which is responsible for patent law (infringement proceedings) including SEP/FRAND-cases, trademark law, copyright law, and design law. He has been the deputy presiding judge since 2023. Georg Baumann has been a member of the 6th Civil Senate of the Munich Higher Regional Court since mid-2021. In this role, he has participated as a judge in numerous proceedings in the above-mentioned areas, in many cases as a rapporteur, e.g. in the cases “Sprachsignalcodierer” (ECLI:DE:OLGMUEN:2025:0320.6U3824.22KART.0A) and “Rivaroxaban” (ECLI:DE:OLGMUEN:2025:0410.6U3325.24E.0A). As the deputy of the presiding judge of the senate, he also presided over several oral proceedings himself. In recent years, he has participated in various international conferences as an expert in panel discussions with judges from other European countries and the UPC on the subject of standard-essential patents and FRAND, for example in Paris and Florence. Before Georg Baumann came to the Munich Regional Higher Court he was head of the unit responsible for patent law, trademark law, copyright law, etc. in the Bavarian State Ministry of Justice (from 2018 to 2021). His tasks here focused on accompanying legislative procedures, e.g. drafting statements, motions for the Bundesrat, etc. In addition, he was involved in setting up the Munich Local Division of the UPC. From 2010 to 2013 Georg Baumann was a family court judge. At that time, he also completed training as a judge mediator (so called “Güterichter” pursuant to Section 278(5) of the German Code of Civil Procedure) and settled several civil law disputes in this role. Due to his many years of experience in patent law in various roles and as a judge in various areas, including as a judge mediator, Georg Baumann has both excellent legal skills and personal skills in dealing with people and in the amicable settlement of disputes.
