Professional biography
Dr. Stojan Arnerstål is a Swedish advokat, accredited mediator and arbitrator whose work sits at the intersection of intellectual property law, contract law and life sciences. He combines a senior academic background in IP law with extensive hands-on experience of the commercial arrangements through which patents and related rights are exploited – a combination well suited to resolving disputes in patent-intensive industries. He is consistently ranked as a leading IP practitioner by Chambers, Legal 500, IAM Patent 1000 and WTR 1000. He holds the degree of docent (associate professor) and served for five years as Director of the Institute of Intellectual Property, Marketing and Competition Law (IMC) at Uppsala University. He has published extensively on IP law, is co-author of leading Swedish textbooks in the field, and continues to lecture regularly at Swedish universities and for professional education providers. Through his boutique firm, Legato Advokat, he advises on commercial contracts and transactions in the life sciences industry, medical technology and pharmaceutical sectors. His practice centers on drafting and negotiating license agreements, technology transfer arrangements, development and collaboration agreements, distribution agreements and clinical trial agreements, frequently in cross-border settings involving multiple jurisdictions. He is also familiar with the regulatory frameworks, including the EU Medical Device Regulation, that shape how such agreements are structured and performed. This day-to-day exposure to the deals themselves gives him a practical understanding of how disputes in these sectors arise and escalate: contested royalty bases and reporting, scope and field-of-use limitations, ownership of improvements and background IP, milestone and diligence obligations, termination rights, and the interplay between patent rights, regulatory pathways and commercial expectations. Parties and appointing bodies engage him for his ability to move quickly to the substance of a dispute, to read commercial and technical documentation with the eye of a practitioner, and to manage proceedings efficiently and even-handedly. As a mediator he focuses on the underlying business interests behind the legal positions, helping parties in ongoing licensing or collaboration relationships find outcomes that preserve value. He is a member of the Swedish Bar Association and works in Swedish and English, and accepts appointments in domestic and international matters.
